Morris Mini-Cooper S Rally

Description

Morris Mini-Cooper S Rally

A beautifully restored, exceptionally documented early Cooper S with genuine Finnish rallying heritage and an extensive period-style competition specification.

Owned by its current owner since the late 80’s.

A rare opportunity to acquire a 1964 Morris Mini-Cooper S, originally built for the Finnish market and retaining its distinctive character as a historic competition car.

Its identity and original specification are documented by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, with additional Finnish museum-vehicle records, historical photographs and other supporting documentation.

The car combines an authentic early 1071 cc Cooper S chassis and engine specification with an extensive collection of competition components, including parts homologated for the 1964 season.

Documented history and provenance

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate confirms the following factory details:

  • Model: Morris Mini-Cooper S
  • Year: 1964
  • Engine: 1071 cc A-Series
  • Chassis number: K-A2S4L-xxxxxx
  • Engine number: 9F-SA-H/xxxxx
  • Body number: 22xxxx

Finnish museum-vehicle documentation records the car’s early history and its use in rallying and circuit racing dating back to the 1960s. Its competition story continued into the 1990s, when it participated in historic rallies. The rallies this car has raced in are documented.

An FIA passport was issued in the early 1990s. Although it has since expired, it remains an important part of the car’s historical competition background.

Personally restored with respect for originality

The current owner restored the car, sourcing original parts and taking considerable care to preserve its historic character and period-correct specification. The car body is still its factory original and not been re-shelled.

The objective was to retain the appearance, equipment and mechanical character of a 1960s competition Mini rather than modernise it to meet today’s historic rally safety requirements.

The engine bay, cockpit and exterior reflect the car’s competition purpose while retaining the character of an early Mk I Cooper S.

During the 1990s, The current owner competed in historic rallies with the car, always driving it with respect. It has sustained no crash damage.

Technical specification and competition preparation

Engine

  • 1071 cc Cooper S engine
  • High-compression pistons
  • EN40B crankshaft with original Cooper S connecting rods
  • Lightened flywheel, balanced together with the crankshaft and pulley
  • Ported and shaped cylinder head
  • Cooper S racing valves
  • 300-degree camshaft, based on the original 649 profile
  • 1.5-inch racing carburettors and racing exhaust manifold
  • Period-style 1960s racing fuel pump of the double-SU type
  • Twin fuel tanks
  • Oil cooler

The stated engine output is approximately 100 hp, giving an excellent power-to-weight ratio in this lightweight competition Mini.

Transmission

  • Straight-cut racing gearbox
  • Straight-cut drop gears

Suspension, steering and brakes

  • Original rubber-cone suspension
  • Period-correct adjustable Koni racing shock absorbers
  • Extended racing front lower control arms
  • 7.5-inch Cooper S-type front disc brakes
  • Original brake servo

Electrical system and rally equipment

The cockpit retains a purposeful period rally layout, including:

  • Halda Twinmaster rally tripmeter
  • Smiths 10,000 rpm tachometer
  • Period-correct Lucas electric windscreen washer
  • Map light and additional rally equipment
  • Dashboard-mounted Lucas fuse box with period-correct fuses
  • Functional period-correct Lucas auxiliary lights
  • Marchal cornering light
  • Period-correct lighting relays

The brake lines, fuel lines and battery cable are routed internally in a period-correct fashion, consistent with the car’s competition-oriented preparation.

Safety equipment and interior

  • Factory-made full roll cage with conical joints, designed to be removable if desired
  • Original 1960s racing seats
  • Original Cooper interior
  • Full interior trim

The interior retains the character of a historic rally car rather than that of a stripped-out modern competition vehicle.

Condition and historic status

The car is registered as a historic vehicle in Finland and is presented in exceptional condition following the current owner’s restoration.

Its historic competition specification has deliberately been retained without the installation of modern safety equipment that would substantially change its period character.

A distinctive piece of Mini competition history

Early 1071 cc Cooper S models occupy a special place in British motorsport history. This example offers considerably more than an attractive classic Mini: it combines documented factory identity, Finnish competition heritage, period-style racing mechanicals, authentic rally equipment and a restoration carried out by an owner personally involved in its historic rallying life.

The combination of its original Finnish export specification, detailed documentation, extensive competition preparation and carefully preserved historic character makes it a particularly interesting proposition for a discerning collector or historic motorsport enthusiast.
