GLAS 1700 GT Cabriolet 1965
Masterpiece with German and Italian roots.
It is reported that just under 122 convertibles were produced with the 1700 cm3 engine, there can not be many survivors left out there, making this a very rare vehicle. First belt-driven car with an overhead camshaft.
Italian Pietro Frua, who designed bodies for Maserati and Rolls Royce, also designed the body for the Glas, which was manufactured in Italy. Other mechanics came from the Glas factory in Germany.
This lovely GLAS 1700 GT Cabriolet 1965 was imported to Finland from Ibiza in the early 1980s and has been in the same family since 1986, when the current owners father purchased it.
It was in great condition at the time of purchase but required a little attention to detail and adjustments to the carburettors. After maintenance and adjustments, the car worked great and is truly wonderful to drive. Only been driven rarely in the summer months and always kept in good condition.
The recorded milage of just over 40 000 km is believed to be correct, although there is no recorded proof of this.
It has been resprayed on the outside at some stage but not by the current owner, internal areas seem to still be original paint.
The fact that the car’s top quality is evidenced by the fact that it has, among other things, oil temperature, oil pressure, coolant temperature, charging, and a tachometer as standard, which at that time were extremely rare in many so-called sports cars.
It can be said that Glas was a pioneer in technology, from which BMW greatly benefited when it bought the GLAS factory in 1967. BMW got access to, among other things, the patent for a belt-driven camshaft.
The 2-carburetor was also a pioneer, with their float chambers located lower on the side of the engine. This can be considered a pioneer of fuel injection.
