Morris Mini Cooper S Works CRX 91B
Description
Morris Mini Cooper S Works CRX 91B
Genuine ‘Works’ cars seldom become available, which makes this a very rare opportunity indeed…
Registration Mark CRX 91B was issued in Berkshire in October or November 1964.
This car was driven by Paddy Hopkirk in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally, It was subsequently sold to Rauno Aaltonen.
In preparation for the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally, BMC’s racing department built three Mini Cooper S racing cars for the previous year’s winner Paddy Hopkirk, Timo Mäkinen and Rauno Aaltonen. In the draw for the cars, Paddy was given CRX 91B.
Timo won the 65 Monte and Paddy won his class.
After Monte, the factory sent the Mini to Finland for Timo to use. Timo drove it in five national rallies. In July 1965 it was returned to Abigdon, England. At that time, it was common for cars that required a thorough restoration to be sold. Often the buyers were from within the team.
Rauno bought this Mini in the autumn of 1965. Once registered in Finland, it was given its current registration number “ECG-72”. The registration “CRX 91B” should still be available, if this Mini would be sold to the UK.
Before arriving in Finland, it was fitted with a new body at Abigdon, this was common after heavy competition use, also Rauno wanted the steering to be changed to the left side. Rauno has also said that he wanted a less conspicuous, but faster Cooper. Rauno owned the Mini in Finland for two years, before it was sold.
A friend of the current owner bought it in the autumn of 1967 and competed in two winter rallies in 1968, then it was sold to the current owner’s brother in January 1969. Current owner has owned it since August 1976.
Restoration
In the late 1980’s the brothers started to restore the Mini back to its original condition, they got a lot of expert help from Robert Young, David Gilbert, John Kelly and many others. The Mini’s build sheet showed them exactly how it left Abingdon for Monte, they restored it according to those specifications. They also got the electrical diagrams and the necessary wires from Robert Young.
Mechanically everything is original, and the correct numbers are present, like engine, gearbox, axles etc.
It has not had much use since the restoration was completed and has been mainly stored and spent time on display at Museums, only used occasionally to keep everything freed up and working.
Rauno Aaltonen and Timo Mäkinen have used the Mini in a few events in the 2000s.
We have good documentation and old photos to verify its history, these can be sent upon request.
