BACKGROUND

The Teijo pickup is super rare, only around 150-200 were reportedly made. Based on the Volkswagen Basic Transporter EA489. The vehicle was produced in Finland as TEIJO by WIHURI, then the official Volkswagen importer in Finland. The Teijo pick-up was made in collaboration with Volkswagen and equipped with a chassis and all technical equipment such as engine, gearbox, instruments, etc. from VW’s shelves.

The cockpit and cargo box are designed and made in Finland to better match the Finnish market. Designed as an affordable, simple van, the TEIJO was produced from 1974-1977.

The Teijo is so rare that many VW enthusiasts do not know about it, which has a special place in Volkswagen’s history.

HISTORY

This vehicle was owned in the late 70’s by the Finnish Company VAPO (horticultural peat business), vehicle number 9. It’s not known how long they owned it. Their company stickers are still present on the doors.

It was purchased by a VW enthusiast over the COVID period, as a restoration project to keep him busy in the pandemic. He stripped it completely back to the bare frame and begun the Nut & Bolt restoration, everything was either renewed or restored back to its original condition.

Since the restoration it has hardly been used and is in like new condition, most likely even better then when it left the factory. It has also listed with the Finnish Museum register on 24.04.2021, just after the restoration was completed.

EXTERIOR

The cabin is still in its original factory blue paint, this is more evident as the front engine compartment lid also still has the original “TEIJO” sticker. The only blue areas that have been repainted are the front and rear fenders.

Just above the passenger’s side front indicator lens, there is what looks to be slight fiberglass cracking. This can be seen in the photos.

All the wood on the truck’s bed has been renewed, so has all the metal framework. The measurement of the bed arear is 3700 x 2000, permitted carrying weight is 1380kg.

INTERIOR

There really wasn’t much to do with the interior as it was still in nice original condition. Main thing to do was to recover the seats in a like for like material, same as when it left the factory.

MECHANICS

Mechanically this Teijo long bed pickup is like new.

• Engine was stripped and totally rebuilt.

• Gearbox striped and checked.

• New brakes.

• New brake & fuel lines

• New bearings.

• New suspension.

• New tires.

UNDERNEATH

Just have a look at the photos, it does not get much better than this.

The frame was taken back to bare metal and resprayed, it is totally rust free.
