This 1955 Volkswagen Beetle is an honest, practical hobby car that respects the original design while remaining a car you can actually enjoy driving.
Finished in its original factory colour, L227 Stratosilver, this Beetle has the timeless rounded bodywork, classic chrome bumpers, steel wheels and unmistakable character that make the early Beetles so special.
From field car to roadworthy classic
The project began with a genuine “field car” wreck, rescued from a barn. It was standing in the barn for approximately 30 years before the current owner bought it in 2022. Since then, considerable work has gone into bringing it back to life.
Work completed includes:
- New heater channels
- New floor pan halves
- New spare-wheel well
- New rear fenders
- New wiring harness
- New fuel tank
- New battery
- Period-correct engine fitted, featuring fixed-mount engine supports
The car retains its original-style 6-volt electrical system, in keeping with its period character. The car is also fitted with a period-correct engine with fixed-mount supports.
The result is a Beetle that has made the journey from a neglected project to a roadworthy classic. It passed its inspection in 2025 and is back on the road.
Mechanical condition
The engine starts and runs, although it burns some oil when cold. Compression readings are a consistent 100 psi across all four cylinders, which is encouraging for an engine of this age. The oil consumption should nevertheless be taken into account, and the engine may benefit from further attention in the future.
The gearbox works exactly as it should.
This is an older Volkswagen with character and some remaining jobs, rather than a fully restored, turn-key showpiece. It is best suited to someone who appreciates classic engineering and enjoys improving a car gradually.
Interior and overall condition
The interior remains in its current, as-is condition. The upholstery shows its age, and a few components are missing, leaving scope for the next owner to restore, repair or personalise the cabin over time.
The exterior presents beautifully with the soft silver-blue tone of the original colour complementing the Beetle’s classic lines.
An honest, usable classic for its next enthusiast. Not a finished show car — a Beetle you can drive, enjoy and make your own.
